The Fells Are Calling, and the Boys Are Answering

Four walkers looking across a Lake District ridge and valley

Crazy how fast the years fly by now, it doesn’t seem like a year since I put fingers to keys to write about our annual boys Lake District trip – M’Mon’s on Tour! In-fact we’re later in the year this year so I’s actually been more than 12 months!

This year’s expedition has been pushed back slightly, only by a few weeks, on account of one of the lads getting hitched to his wonderful fiancée!

No complaints here, we all had a banging time celebrating in Devon!

Anyway, tomorrow morning we will all pile in the Funvee (my beautiful old truck) and head northbound up the M6, probably stopping for lunch on the way, here we shall take full advantage of a certain staff discount!

I hope to arrive early afternoon, dump the gear at base camp, lace up and hit the fells!

I hope for a steady warm up walk along the ridge or through the valley to Elterwater where we shall have an evening meal at either The Brittannia or The Wainwright probably indulge in a few fine Lakeland Ales while we are at it!

The Brittannia Inn is one of the most popular in the Lake District and a firm family favourite.

We will no doubt stumble back using muscle memory and our head torches for guidance, maybe a pint in The Talbot if rehydration is required….. The rest of the weekend is weather dependant and on a need to know basis….

I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for ages! A few days away with the lads, some proper hiking, plenty of laughs and absolutely no responsibilities beyond deciding which pub for a post hike pint! Just what the doctor ordered….

And that’s the thing, it really is what the doctor should order, getting out into the fells is by far the best therapy for me, I’ve spoken about it before on my YouTube channel, my problems don’t seem quite so big up there! Everything is put into perspective and I come back with so much more clarity than when I left!

I’d encourage anyone to get out for a walk, challenge themselves a little and, if possible, get up a hill! You don’t need to travel all the way to the Lakes, there are beautiful places to explore all over the country.

For me it has to be The Lake District. It is by no means close to home, but it is where I am most relaxed. Maybe it’s the familiarity of the place, having been going up there with my family since I was born, maybe it’s the charm of it all…

But one thing I do know is when I’m there I am in a much better place, fresh air, epic views, a good physical challenge and, at the end of it all, a pint of Lakeland ale and some proper pub grub.

All the better because I’ve blummin earned it!!

On that note, I’ll catch you next week! I’m off to the Lakes with my pals, switching off the phone, switching off from the real world and switching on mountain mode!

Take it easy!
